Computers, phones and tablets are part of everyday life, but long periods of screen use can leave your eyes feeling dry, gritty, tired or intermittently blurry. These symptoms are often described as digital eye strain, and dry eye is one of its most common components.

Screen use is not known to permanently damage healthy eyes through normal viewing. However, it can change the way you blink. People tend to blink less often—and may blink less completely—while concentrating on a screen. This can destabilize the tear film and allow tears to evaporate more quickly, worsening dry eye symptoms.

The good news is that simple changes to your screen habits and workspace can often help. If symptoms persist, an eye examination can identify whether dry eye disease, meibomian gland dysfunction, an uncorrected prescription or another condition is contributing.

What is dry eye disease?

Dry eye disease is a multifactorial condition in which the tears and ocular surface lose their normal balance. It may occur when the eyes do not produce enough tears, when tears evaporate too quickly, or through a combination of both.

A healthy tear film keeps the front surface of the eye smooth, comfortable and optically clear. It also helps protect the eye and wash away debris. When the tear film becomes unstable, symptoms may include irritation, burning, fluctuating vision and excessive watering.

The tear film is supported by water, mucin and oils produced by tissues around the eye. The meibomian glands along the eyelids produce oils that reduce tear evaporation. When these glands are not functioning well—a condition called meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD)—screen-related changes in blinking may make symptoms more noticeable.

How does screen time affect dry eye?

Research consistently links digital device use with changes in blinking and greater ocular discomfort. The relationship is not simply about the number of hours spent on a device; blink quality, task intensity, contact lens wear, the surrounding environment and a person’s underlying eye health can all affect symptoms.

Reduced blink rate

Blinking spreads tears across the eye and refreshes the tear film. During concentrated tasks such as reading or computer work, blink rate often decreases. Studies comparing screen reading with other visual tasks have documented meaningful changes in blink behaviour.

Incomplete blinking

A complete blink brings the upper and lower eyelids together. During screen use, some people make more partial blinks, leaving part of the eye exposed. Incomplete blinking has been associated with tear-film instability, dry eye symptoms and poorer meibomian gland function.

Sustained near focus

Keeping the eyes focused at one distance for a long time can contribute to eyestrain, headaches and temporary blur. Focusing effort does not directly cause dry eye disease, but it often occurs alongside reduced blinking, making dryness and visual fatigue more noticeable.

Dry or moving air

Low humidity and airflow from heating, air conditioning or fans can increase tear evaporation. Symptoms may be worse if air blows directly toward your face or if the room is very dry.

Symptoms of dry eyes from screens

Screen-related dry eye symptoms often become more noticeable later in the day or after prolonged computer use. They may include:

  •       Dryness, grittiness or a foreign-body sensation
  •       Burning or stinging
  •       Redness
  •       Watery eyes
  •       Blurred or fluctuating vision that briefly improves after blinking
  •       Eye fatigue or heaviness
  •       Light sensitivity
  •       Reduced contact lens comfort

Watery eyes may seem inconsistent with dry eye, but irritation can trigger reflex tearing. These reflex tears do not always restore a stable, healthy tear film.

Who is more likely to experience screen-related dry eye?

Anyone can develop symptoms, but the risk may be higher in people who:

  •       Work or study on digital devices for long periods
  •       Wear contact lenses
  •       Already have dry eye disease or meibomian gland dysfunction
  •       Work in a dry, heated or air-conditioned environment
  •       Take medications that may affect tear production
  •       Have certain autoimmune or systemic health conditions
  •       Are experiencing age- or hormone-related changes

Children and teenagers can also experience dry eye symptoms with prolonged device use. Studies in younger populations have found associations between greater screen exposure, altered blinking and dry eye signs or symptoms. Persistent symptoms in a child should be assessed rather than assumed to be harmless screen fatigue.

How to reduce dry eye symptoms during screen time

Take regular visual breaks

The 20-20-20 rule is a simple reminder: every 20 minutes, look at something approximately 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. This breaks up sustained near work and provides an opportunity to blink normally. It is a practical habit for digital eye strain, although it should not replace treatment when dry eye disease is present.

Practise complete blinking

Pause periodically and make several slow, complete blinks without squeezing your eyelids. This helps redistribute the tear film and may support the release of oil from the meibomian glands.

Position the screen slightly below eye level

Looking slightly downward can reduce how much of the eye surface is exposed. Place the monitor at a comfortable distance, enlarge text when needed and avoid leaning toward the screen.

Reduce glare and improve lighting

Adjust screen brightness to suit the room, minimize reflections and avoid placing a bright window directly in front of or behind the monitor. Glare is not a direct cause of dry eye, but reducing visual effort may make screen use more comfortable.

Avoid direct airflow

Redirect fans and heating or air-conditioning vents away from your face. A humidifier may help in a very dry room, provided it is cleaned regularly according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Consider lubricating eye drops

Artificial tears can provide temporary relief for mild symptoms, but products differ in their ingredients and intended use. If you need drops frequently, ask your optometrist whether a preservative-free product or a formulation designed for evaporative dry eye would be appropriate. Drops that only “get the red out” are not the same as lubricating eye drops and may not address the cause of symptoms.

When should you see an optometrist?

Book an eye examination if symptoms:

  •       Persist despite regular breaks and workspace changes
  •       Occur most days or are getting worse
  •       Interfere with work, reading, driving or contact lens wear
  •       Include frequent or persistent blurred vision
  •       Require repeated use of over-the-counter drops
  •       Are accompanied by significant pain, marked redness, light sensitivity, discharge or a sudden change in vision

Significant pain, sudden vision loss or a new severe red eye requires prompt assessment and should not be attributed to screen use without an examination.

How is dry eye assessed?

A dry eye assessment looks beyond symptoms alone. Depending on the clinical findings, your optometrist may evaluate:

  •       Eyelid position and blink completeness
  •       Meibomian gland structure and function
  •       Tear-film stability and tear volume
  •       The cornea and conjunctiva for signs of irritation or damage
  •       Contact lens fit and wearing habits
  •       Medications, health conditions and environmental factors

Treatment is based on the underlying cause and severity. Recommendations may include changes to screen habits, eyelid care, appropriate lubricating drops, prescription medication or in-office treatment for meibomian gland dysfunction. Not every treatment is suitable for every patient.

Can treating dry eye improve vision?

Yes. The tear film is the eye’s first refracting surface, so an unstable tear film can cause vision to fluctuate. If blinking briefly sharpens your vision, tear-film instability may be contributing. Treating the ocular surface can improve both comfort and visual consistency, although persistent blur should be investigated for other causes as well.

Frequently asked questions

Does screen time permanently damage the eyes?

Normal use of digital screens has not been shown to cause permanent structural damage to healthy eyes. However, prolonged viewing can produce significant dry eye and digital eye strain symptoms. Screen-related discomfort can also reveal an uncorrected prescription, focusing problem or underlying ocular surface disease.

Can screen time cause dry eye disease?

Screen use is associated with dry eye signs and symptoms, particularly when exposure is prolonged. Reduced and incomplete blinking are important mechanisms. However, dry eye disease is multifactorial, so screens are usually one contributing factor rather than the only cause.

Do blue-light glasses treat dry eye?

No. Blue-light filtering lenses do not restore the tear film or treat meibomian gland dysfunction. A Cochrane systematic review found that blue-light filtering lenses may not reduce short-term eyestrain during computer use compared with standard lenses. Proper prescription, screen setup, regular breaks and treatment of any underlying dry eye are more relevant to symptom relief.

Can children get dry eyes from screens?

Yes. Children can experience dry eye signs and symptoms, and research has found an association with longer periods of digital device use. Encourage regular breaks and arrange an eye examination if symptoms are frequent, persistent or affecting schoolwork.

When should I use artificial tears?

Lubricating drops may help with occasional mild symptoms. If you are unsure which product to choose, use drops frequently or continue to have symptoms, an optometrist can identify the type of dry eye and recommend a more appropriate treatment plan.
